Curriculum
LIVE – Life in All Its Fullness
“I have come so that you may have life – life in all its fullness.” (John 10:10)
At Bickerton Holy Trinity CE Primary School, our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision and values of Love & Kindness, Friendship, Respect, Justice, Freedom & Responsibility, and Equality.
We believe every child deserves a rich, ambitious and joyful education that nurtures curiosity, builds strong foundations and provides opportunities to flourish academically, personally and spiritually.
Our curriculum is shaped by four principles that bring our vision to life.
L – Life-Long Learners
We inspire children to develop a love of learning, confidence and resilience that will stay with them throughout life.
Our curriculum is anchored by vocabulary and bridged by repeated encounters. Important knowledge, concepts and vocabulary are carefully sequenced and revisited so children can remember, connect and apply their learning.
We encourage children to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and develop positive learning behaviours.
I – Immersive
We bring learning to life through memorable experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
Educational visits, visitors, outdoor learning, performances and practical activities deepen understanding and broaden children's horizons.
Our rural setting provides wonderful opportunities to explore the natural world, while our wider curriculum introduces children to experiences beyond their everyday lives.
V – Valuing Diversity
We celebrate individuality and help children understand and appreciate the diverse world around them.
Through exploring different cultures, faiths, beliefs and perspectives, pupils develop empathy, respect and a sense of belonging.
Our Christian values inspire children to recognise injustice, challenge stereotypes and become courageous advocates who can make a positive difference.
E – Enquiring Minds
Why? How? What if?
We encourage children to ask questions, investigate, reason and think critically.
Our curriculum develops curiosity and helps pupils make meaningful connections between their learning.
Through our “ripples of significance”, children explore why important knowledge, people, events and ideas matter, developing a deeper understanding of the world.
Our Curriculum Design
Our curriculum is built upon the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum.
Learning is carefully sequenced to develop essential knowledge, vocabulary and skills, with opportunities to revisit and deepen understanding.
High-quality teaching, purposeful assessment and engaging experiences ensure children build secure foundations for future learning.
Mixed-Age Learning: Different Routes, One Destination
As a small rural school, mixed-age teaching is an important part of our approach.
We recognise that children may be at different stages of learning, so teachers carefully plan appropriate teaching, support and challenge while maintaining high expectations for everyone.
Our curriculum ensures clear progression and age-related expectations, avoiding gaps or unnecessary repetition.
Different Routes. One Destination. Every Child Flourishing.
An Inclusive Curriculum
We believe every child should have access to an ambitious and engaging curriculum.
Our approach is informed by Ordinarily Available Inclusive Provision (OAIP), using clear explanations, modelling, scaffolding and appropriate adaptations to remove barriers to learning.
We celebrate individual strengths and recognise that children may take different routes towards success.
Personal Development and Wellbeing
Education at Bickerton is about developing the whole child.
Through our curriculum, Christian values, collective worship, PSHE and wider opportunities, children develop positive relationships, emotional wellbeing, spiritual awareness and a sense of responsibility.
We encourage children to reflect, make thoughtful choices and contribute positively to their communities.
The Impact of Our Curriculum
We evaluate our curriculum through what children know, remember and can do, using assessment and pupil experiences to inform teaching and improvement.
We want children to leave Bickerton as knowledgeable, confident, resilient, creative, respectful and enquiring learners, ready to embrace new opportunities and make a positive difference.
Above all, we want every child to enjoy a happy and fulfilling primary education that prepares them for the future while allowing them to flourish today.
