Phonics and Early Reading at Bickerton Holy Trinity
At Bickerton Holy Trinity CE Primary School, learning to read is our highest priority. We are committed to ensuring that every child develops the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a fluent, enthusiastic and independent reader.
We teach Read Write Inc. (RWI) Phonics, a systematic synthetic phonics programme developed by Ruth Miskin. Our ambition is for every child to become a confident, fluent reader by the end of Key Stage 1, providing the essential foundations for success across the curriculum.
All staff receive Ruth Miskin training, supported by regular coaching and professional development to ensure a consistent, high-quality approach to teaching phonics and early reading.
Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 participate in daily Read Write Inc. sessions, carefully matched to their current phonics knowledge and reading ability. Regular assessment enables us to identify gaps quickly, adapt teaching and ensure that children make sustained progress.
We recognise that some children require additional support to become confident readers. Our lowest-attaining readers receive targeted, daily one-to-one support to help them keep up and build fluency, accuracy and confidence.
Pupils in Key Stage 2 who have not yet secured their phonics knowledge or reading fluency continue to receive appropriate Read Write Inc. teaching and targeted intervention, ensuring that no child is left behind.
Our approach is underpinned by high expectations, early identification of need and a commitment to inclusive teaching. We believe that every child deserves to experience the joy of reading, opening doors to learning, imagination and opportunity.
Through our Christian vision of “Life in all its fullness” (John 10:10), we aim to nurture lifelong readers who develop the confidence, curiosity and skills to flourish.
